My project aims to uncover the importance of the use of permaculture in the collard city growers gardens in Troy, NY. Permaculture revolves around 3 main principles: care for the planet, care for the people, and fair share. What is fair share? Fair share means taking in what one needs and giving away what one does not with limits. For example, if you decide to grow fruit trees, you would not be able to finish all the fruits you harvest. As a result, you will have an unnecessary abundance of fruits. Therefore, you would give your surplus to the community and the earth for many other benefits. This is an example of fair share. Another positive aspect of fair share is that giving to others in your community can create a special and strong bond among you and your community members. As well as creating new relationships, sharing with the earth will allow for growth of more fruit trees in the future that leads to a bigger ecosystem, which eventually heals and improves the earth. This discloses the importance of fair share, one of the main ideas of permaculture. Because the exercise and knowledge of permaculture are impactful for the earth, community, and individuals, through my project, I would like to spread the awareness of the value of permaculture among my peers and community members. 

During my internship at the Sanctuary of Independent Media, I would like to construct a “permaculture walk” around the North Troy area by utilizing the resources and information offered. After completing the walk with an informational pamphlet and signs all around the community, I would like to invite my school community as well as community members living in Troy to join me on my “permaculture walk” that would factually and actively inform them about the existing and ongoing permaculture ideas in their community spaces. In addition, I would also like to begin permaculture projects in the Collard City Growers’ gardens located near the main building of the Sanctuary of Independent Media. With easy access, I wish to create small projects that involve permaculture principles in the gardens and the hoop house that would enhance the existing spaces to benefit all community members. 

My main goal through this project is to spread the idea of sharing, protection, and thoughtfulness. A small, easy act of permaculture that could initially seem insignificant could remarkably improve our environment, community, and people.
